This temple is the birthplace of the traditional Thai massage, which is still offered at the site. Wat Pho was built by King Rama I and established before Bangkok was the capital. It is regarded as the first grade royal monastery, the most important during the reign of King Rama I. A short long-tail boat ride from Wat Pho is the Grand Palace, where King Rama I moved his residency to after the fall of Ayutthaya, Thailand’s former capital. The king had ordered reconstruction and restoration of Wat Pho and many images from the temples of Ayutthaya that were abandoned were then relocated to Wat Pho. As briefly mentioned before, getting between Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, it is recommended to take a long-tail boat. It should only cost 1,000 THB for two person, equivalent to thirty USD, although the merchants will try to sell it to you for 2,000 THB, your negotiating skills will play a role. With the private boat ride, you will see local Thai living as you cruise down the many canals. Sceneries such as huts and shacks on the water can be seen most of the way with how the locals’ living quarters look like, and of course humble views of the city from the water.

Even with religion being such a big part of the Thai culture, there is plenty of space for fun and games. The happening part of town in Bangkok is Sukhumvit, which is easily accessible by trains. Sukhumvit is a neighborhood, but it is also a road and it happens to be one of the longest boulevards in the world, running into the Cambodian border. The neighborhood is known to be a good nightlife spot with many restaurants, clubs and bars alive at night.

Popular night spots also include Soi 38 Night Market, which consists of cheap street food. Aside from the bars and clubs of Sukhumvit, one cannot visit Bangkok without a visit to Patpong. It is the entertainment district of Bangkok, well known as the Red Light District. Even if this is not your cup of tea, it is famous in Thailand therefore warrants at least a stroll through the street, just to see all of the sex industry stereotypes of Bangkok coming to life. When walking down the street, girls dressed up in many different costumes and attires sit in groups outside of businesses that are closed for the day.

Behind them, there is a tiny alley with a door leading upstairs, presumably where the otransactionso take place. There are also a lot of hostess, Go Go and strip bars in the area. Most of them have girls in lingerie hanging outside trying to lure you in, calling out at you from across the street to have her company. Around the corner of the brothels and adult bars, is a busy night market catering to tourists, if you’ve had enough of the sleazy atmosphere. There is also another market, a bigger one that goes on during the day, weekends only called the Chatuchak Markets. They proclaim that they are one the world’s largest weekend market with more than 15,000 booths. They have everything from souvenirs, hand-made goods to all sorts of local foods with vendors who have set up tents, booths and plastic dining tables and chairs to dine in.

Public transportation in Thailand is plentiful from cheap rickshaws called oTuk Tukso, the BTS Sky Train, MRT trains, taxi cabs, buses, ferries and long tail boats; you definitely have an array of options to get around the city. During a trip to Bangkok, you should try each mode of transportation for the experience as each is unique, especially the Tuk Tuks. Trains are efficient, clean and modern. Ferries are chaotic and a frenzy to ride. The long tail boats offer a personal boat with a nice, relaxing view of the city.
