BANGKOK, The soaring roof and gleaming spires of the Grand Palace and the citys many historic temples Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Temple of Dawn and other evocative shrines present the visitor a picture of medieval Oriental wonder; the very stuff of Eastern fairytale.

Bangkok, located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, is the capital since 1782. It is both a gateway and principal destination for most travelers. On the Chao Phraya, there are river taxis and regular shuttle services, as well as longtail boats for private hire. There is also the tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled Thai traditional transportation.

Bangkok is never without temples. In fact, it has 400 of them at present. One example is the Sukhothai Traimit Golden Buddha, the largest Golden Buddha in the world. Made of pure gold, it measures 12 feet by 5 inches in diameter and has a height of 15 feet, 9 inches from the base to the crown, weighs approximately 5 tons.

The Temple of the Reclining Buddha or Wat Pho (also known as Wat Chetupon). It is one of the oldest and with the largest number of pagodas (95). It was built by King Rama 1,200 years ago to provide public education. The major attraction of the temple is the 46-meter-long and 15-meter-high gold-plated reclining Buddha with feet inlaid with mother of pearl, depicting the 108 signs of the Buddha. The Grand Palace or Phra Borom Maha Ratchawang, is famous for its impressive buildings. It was established in 1782 and it houses not only the royal residence and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
