BANGKOK There are a lot of things to write about this city of 10 million people but in this article I will only touch on its most popular attractions: temples, shops & markets, food and lifestyle. Bangkok, Thailands capital city has transformed into a modern, exciting and sophisticated metropolis since the last time I was here a decade or so ago. Thailand, once called Siam, was never colonized and thus kept intact its unique culture and heritage. But today this great city has successfully combined the ancient and the modern world.

The Tuk-Tuk or three-wheeled taxis, used to be the king of the road here but today they are fewer in number. While they are still popular for short journey through sidestreets and could cost anywhere from R20 to R150 depending where one chooses to go, most Thais today prefer to ride the sky train (it covers key central areas and is easier to use), public buses which are plenty, river taxis, metered taxis and motorcycle taxis, the fastest way to plod through the traffic congestion of Bangkok. If you want to try it, look for the driver with colored vest. Fares are negotiated before departure. But hold on tight.

Founded in 1782 by King Rama I, the first monarch of the present Chakri Dynasty, Bangkok is a national treasurehouse and Thailands spiritual, cultural, educational, political and commercial center. It is the home of the Royal Family and one tenth of the nations entire population of 62 million.

Thailand is a constitutional monarchy with a democratic system of government and a well-loved monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadij, Rama IX of the Chakri dynasty and the great-great-grandson of Rama IV, who was popularized by the classic American movie The King and I.

The Thais are believed to have migrated originally from southern China. Over 95 percent of the population are Buddhist, with Muslim, Christian, Hindu and animist minorities.

Bangkok official name is something for Ripleys Believe it or Not. Its the worlds longest name for a city. If you want to memorize it, here it is: Krung Thep Maha Nakhon Amorn Rattanako-Sindra Mahin Drayutthaya Mahadilok Pop Naparattana Rachhani Burirona Udom Rachnivet Mahastran Amorn Pimarn Avatarn Satit Sakatuhiya Vishnukarn Presit.

In English: City of Angels, Great City and Residence of the Emerald Buddha, Impregnable City of God Indra, Grand Capital of the World, Endowed With Nine Precious Gems, Abounding in Enormous Royal Palaces Which Resemble the Heavenly Abode Where Reigns the Reincarnated God, A City Given by Indra and Built By Vishnukarn.
